About Hingoli District (Maharashtra)

Hingoli, a part of the Aurangabad division is a district of Maharashtra state with its administrative headquarters located at Hingoli city. Earlier, the city of Hingoli was under the Nizam's regime and at that time it was a taluka of Parbhani district. During the regime of Nizam, it was a military base since it was a border place with Vidhrabha. In the ancient period, natives of Hingoli had witnessed two big as well as important wars between Tipu Sultan and Maratha (1803) and between Nagpurkar and Bhosale (1857). On the other side the present district of Hingoli was a part of Bombay state in 1956. After the reorganisation of the states in 1960 it came under the Maharashtra state as part of Parbhani district. Finally, Hingoli, as a separate district came into existence on 1st May, 1999 after it was carved out from Parbhani district.

F. M. Shinde, a prominent Marathi writer was born in the year 1948 in the district. Shinde was elected as the President of the 87th Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan, held in Saswad in 2014.

Geographically, the district lies at 19°72'N latitude, 77°15'E longitude and 463 m altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 2.32%% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 4,827 sq km. and in terms o geographical area it occupies the ranks of 34th in the state and 238th in India. It is bounded by Akola district and Yavatmal district on the North, Nanded district on the South East and Parbhani district on the West. The climate of the district remains extremely hot during the summers. The actual rainfall in the district was 943.4 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administration wise, the district is divided into 5 tehsils namely Hingoli, Kalamnuri, Sengaon, Aundha Nagnath and Basmath. Moreover, it comprises 3 towns and 675 villages. The administrative language in the district is Marathi.

According to 2011 census the district has a population of 11,77,345 out of which 6,06,294 are males and 5,71,051 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 942 females for every 1000 males. During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 19.27% including 19.97% were males and 18.53% were females. The population density in the district is 244 persons per sq. km. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 19,146 out of which 10,021 were males and 9,125 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 4,352 out of which 2,626 were males and 1,726 were females. As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Hindu with 73.32% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal language in the district is Marathi with 83.53%.

Agriculture is the backbone of the economy of the district. Most of the lands in the district are use for agricultural purposes. More than half of its population are engaged in agriculture in order to earn their livelihood. The chief agricultural products in the district are jowar, cotton, pulses, rice, groundnut, mango, etc. The adoption of the new agricultural technologies amongst the famers of the district helps to increase the production of various agricultural items. The district is scantily industrialised. In 2006 the Ministry of Panchayati Raj declared Hingoli as one of the country's 250 most backward districts and currently receiving funds from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF). In the year 2020-21 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 18,41,500 lakhs at current price and Rs. 12,98,000 lakhs at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The net domestic product in the district during the period 2020-21 was Rs. 16,68,600 lakh at current price and Rs. 11,68,900 lakh at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost during the period 2020-21 was Rs. 1,32,740 at current price and Rs. 92,987 at constant prices in the year 2011-2012.

The district is well known as an abode of several reputed educational institutions. It provides a platform for higher education. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 78.17% including 86.94% are males and 68.95% are females.

The district has several centres of attraction which allures many travellers from different parts of the country as well as world. Aundha Nagnath, located in the district has one of the twelve jyotirlingas which made it one of the most significant places of pilgrimage for Hindus in India. The temple has been built in the ancient Hemadpanthi style of architecture with some exquisite carvings. The temple covers an area of almost 60,000 sq. ft. Every year on the occasion of Shivaratri and Vijayadashami, a large number of pilgrims from far off places come to this temple in order to offer their prayers. Tulaja Devi Sansthan in the district is associated with an interesting history. Some 125 years ago, Swami Keshavraj had a divine vision of the Goddess Tulja Bhavani in his dream and later on he found a sculpture of the Goddess while excavating a cave. He then immediately constructed the temple of the Goddess at the same place. Some other places of interest in the district are Mallinath Digambar Jain Temple, Sant Namdev Sansthan, Barashiv Hanuman, Narsi Namdeo and many more.
