About East Nimar / Khandwa District (Madhya Pradesh)

Now-a-days the East Nimar district is popularly known as Khandwa district.Khandwa district, a part of Indore division is a district of Madhya Pradesh state with its administrative headquarters located at Khandwa city. During different periods of time the place was ruled by many different rulers and finally the place was ruled by Marathas but the arrival of British compelled the Marathas to surrender the place to them in the year 1818. Then the British made it a part of the Central Provinces and Berar. The western portion of the region formed the current Khargone district and made it a part of the Indore princely state. When India got its independence in 1947, at that time the Central Provinces and Berar was transferred into the newly formed Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. Prior to 1956, the Khandwa district was known as Nimar district. At that time the today’s Khargone district of Madhya Pradesh was also called as Nimar, so in order to eradicate the confusion, the districts were renamed as West and East Nimar. Until recently Khandwa district was known to all as East Nimar district. The district came into existence on 15th August, 2003.

Kishore Kumar, an illustrious Indian film playback singer, actor, lyricist, composer, producer, director and screenwriter was born on 4th August, 1929 at Khandwa town. He was honoured by the most prestigious Filmfare Awards for Best Male Playback Singer for eight times and made a record for winning the most Filmfare Awards in that category.

Geographically, the district lies at 21°83'N latitude, 76°35'E longitude and 180 m Altitude.In the year 2021, there was a total 28.36% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 7,352 sq km. and in terms of geographical area it occupies the ranks of 14th in the state and 127th in India. It is bounded by Dewas district on the North, Burhanpur district on the South, Betul district and Harda district on the East and Khargone district on the West. The climate of the district is pleasant and healthy. The actual rainfall in the district was 947.1 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administration wise, the district is divided into 4 tehsils namely Khandwa, Punasa (Mundi), Harsud and Pandhana. There are 1 Lok Sabha seat and 4 Assembly constituencies in the district. Moreover, the district comprises 5 sub-districts, 5 towns and 711 villages. The administrative language in the district is Hindi.

According to 2011 census the district has a population of 13,10,061 out of which 6,74,329 are males and 6,35,732 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 943 females for every 1000 males. During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 21.50% including 20.77% were males and 22.28%were females. The population density in the district is 178 persons per sq. km. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 26,933 out of which 14,285 were males and 12,648 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 9,068 out of which 5,608 were males and 3,460 were females. As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Hindu with 90.25% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal languages in the district are Hindi and Marathi with 76.66% and 1.05%.

Agriculture is the backbone of the economy of the district. Most of its lands are use for agricultural purposes. More than half of its population are engaged in agriculture in order to earn their livelihood. The chief agricultural products in the district are soybean, cotton, jowar, groundnut, banana, wheat, sugarcane, chilli, etc. The adoption of the new agricultural technologies amongst the famers of the district helps to increase the production of various agricultural items. The district is scantily industrialised. Some of its principal industries are Agarwal Indotex Ltd, Khalsa Overseas, Khandwa Oils, etc. Every year a good amount of revenue comes from these industries helps in its economy to a great extent. In 2006 the Ministry of Panchayati Raj declared Khandawa as one of the country's 250 most backward districts and currently receiving funds from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF). In the year 2019-20 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 13,84,445 lakhs at current price and Rs. 8,44,874 lakhs at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The net domestic product in the district during the period 2019-20 was Rs. 12,76,055 lakh at current price and Rs. 7,59,891 lakh at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost during the period 2019-20 was Rs. 85,336 at current price and Rs. 50,817 at constant prices in the year 2011-2012.

The district is an abode of several reputed educational institutions. It provides a platform for higher education. Some of its recognised government educational institutions are Government Arts & Commerce College (Harsood), Makhan Lal Chaturvedi Government Girls PG College, Shri Nilkantheshwar Government PG College, Government College (Mundi), etc. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 66.39% out of which 76.29% are males and 55.92% are females.

Bhagwantrao Mandloi, an eminent Indian politician and served as the chief minister of the Madhya Pradesh for two terms i.e. from 1st January, 1957 to 30th January, 1957 and from 12th March, 1963 to 29th September, 1963 was born in the year 1892 at Khandwa city. He was a member of Indian National Congress party. The Government of India honoured him by the most prestigious Padma Bhushan Award.

The district has several centres of attraction which allures many travellers from different parts of the country as well as world. Omkareshwar Mandhata, situated on the bank of Narmada River and at a distance of 75 km. from Khandwa is a pious place for Hindus and Jains. Mamaleshwar, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Hindus and Siddhawar Kut of Jains are located at this place. The place got its name "Omkareshwar" because of the shape of the island. Dada Dhuniwale Darbar, located in the south-western side of the Khandwa town is a place of faith and worship. It has the the samadhi of the great Avadhoot Hindu saints Swami Keshwanandaji Maharaj and Swami Hariharanandji Maharaj, also popularly known as "Bare Dadaji" and "Chhote Dadaji". Turja Bhavani Mata temple, located near to the Dadaji Darbar in the district is devoted to the Goddess Maa Turja Bhavani. During the period of Navratri pilgrims from far off places comes to this temple to offer their prayers. Some other notable places of interest in the district are Ghantaghar, Dam at Narmada Nagar near Punasa, Nav Chandni Devi Dam, Nagchum Dam, Gauri Kunja, Sagar Dam, etc.
