About Amreli District (Gujarat)

Amreli district is a district of Gujarat state, situated at its western part with its administrative headquarters located at Amreli city. The district got its name from the headquarter city Amreli. Legend believes that Amreli was established as a city place in 534 AD and at that time the place was popularly known as Anumanji. Later the name of the place was changed to Amlik and then Amravati. The ancient Sanskrit name of Amreli was Amarvalli. Amreli was a small village in its initial stage. But with the passage of time Amreli had changed from village to town. In 1780s Amreli was overpowered by the Marathas. Amreli was developed to the fullest during the period of Vithalrao Devaji, the Diwan of this place from 1801 to 1820. During the period in between 18th century to 1959, the two placed named Dwarika and Okhamandal was a part of Gaikwad-Amreli state but those two cities were became a part of Jamnagar district after 1959. In the year 1956 the Amreli district was emerged as a separate district in the map of Gujarat state.

Dr. Jivraj Narayan Mehta was the first Chief Minister of Gujarat was born on 29th August, 1887 at Amreli city. He was a member of Indian National Congress party.

Geographically, the district lies at 21°62'N latitude, 71°23'E longitude and 128 m altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 3.58% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 7,397 sq km. and interms of geographical area it occupies the ranks of 10th in the state and 117th in India. It is bounded by Rajkot District on the North, Arabian Sea on the South, Bhavnagar District on the East and Junagadh district on the West. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 884.0 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administration wise, the district is divided into 11 talukas namely Amreli, Bagasara, Dhari, Vadia, Babra, Lathi, Lilia, Savar Kundla, Khambha, Rajula and Jafarabad. There are 1 Lok Sabha seat and 5 Assembly constituencies in the district. Moreover, the district comprises 10 towns and 616 villages. The administrative language in the district is Gujarati.

According to 2011 census the district as a population of 15,14,190 out of which 7,71,049 are males and 7,43,141 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 964 females for every 1000 males. During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 8.63% including 9.9% were males and 7.34% were females. The population density in the district is 205 persons per sq. km. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 24,803 out of which 13,150 were males and 11,653 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 11,027 out of which 6,273 were males and 4,754 were females.

The district is scantily industrialised. There are no big industries in the district but it has some small industries like oil mills, gem cutting and polishing industries. To some extent the economy of the district is also depends upon agriculture. The chief agricultural products in the district are Bajra, jowar, cotton, etc. The adoption of the new agricultural technologies amongst the famers of the district helps to increase the production of various agricultural items. Amreli district is famous for its diamond industry. There are some principal industries in the district are UltraTech Cement Co. Ltd., Narmada Cement Co. Ltd., Metadist Co. Ltd., Dharamshi Morarji Chemicals Ltd., GHC Ltd., etc. Every year a huge chunk of revenue comes from these industries helps in its economy remarkably.

The district is an abode of several reputed educational institutions. It provides a platform for higher education. There are some recognised educational institutions in the district namely S.D. Kotak Law College, G.M. Bilakhia College of Arts and Commerce, D G Shikshan Mahavidyalaya, K.K. Parekh Commerce College, Shree Leuva Patel Trust MBA Mahila College, K.V. Virani Institute of Pharmacy and Research Center, J.C. Dhanak Arts and Commerce College, etc. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 74.25% including 82.21% are males and 66.09% are females.

Virjibhai Thummar, an eminent Indian politician and a member of the 14th Lok Sabha from the Amreli constituency was born on 31st May, 1959 at Amreli city. He is a member of the Indian National Congress party. Naranbhai Kachhadia, an illustrious Indian politician and a member of 15th and 16th Lok Sabha from the Amreli constituency was born on 25th April, 1955 at Amreli city. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The district has numerous centres of attraction which allures many travellers from different parts of the country as well as world. Gir Wildlife Sanctuary, located at southwest of the Gujarat state was established in the year 1965 in order to protect the remaining wild population of lion outside the regions of Africa. It encloses an area of about 116 sq-miles. Nagnath temple, an extraordinary temple in the district was constructed by Late Diwan of Amreli. The marvellous architecture of the temple attracts visitors from far distance places. Port Pipavav, in the district is the first private port of the country. Some other places of interest in the district are Balaji Hanuman Temple, Kamnath Temple, Gayatri Temple, Tapovan Temple, Bhimnath Temple, Khodiyar Temple, Bhurakhiya Hanuman Temple, Rokadia Hanuman Temple, Rajmahal Palace and many more.
